Bharatnatyam is one of the ancient and a popular classical dance forms in India, has a divine origin and is specifically known for its purity and chastity. As per the legend this dance form was depicted by Brahma on the request of Devas to create a Veda that can be understood by common man. It is believed that this fifth Veda created by Brahma was propagated through Bharat Muni, who wrote the bible of classical dances known as ‘Natyashastra’.
 

As per Natyashastra, this dance form combines the three Natya, Nirtta and Nritya. The dance form includes graceful and tender movements of the body in an artistic and elegant way. Here, it will be expected that the student has a strong grounding, and thus, more and more complex concepts will be introduced in the courses to come.

n this course, the student will be taught intricate taala patterns in the nritta composition tillana. Also, keertanam or stuti based on the deities Shiva, Devi, Ganesha, Murugan and so on will be shown. Students will also learn Natuvangam of alaripu on tattakali. The oral consists of recitation of the samyukta hasta viniyogas and demonstration of the hastakriya of the sapta taala of the Carnatic taala system, as well as recitation of each jaati in it. In the written examination, the student will be questioned on topics such as the Devdasi tradition, the folk dances of India, as also the differences between folk, classical, and film dance. In addition to this, the student will be expected to have in-depth knowledge about Bharatnatyam, and conepts such as margam within it.
